Banks and Trusts

As of December 31, 2022, there were 199 banks and four nondeposit trust companies regulated by the Missouri Division of Finance.

Missouri ranks fourth in the nation in the number of state-chartered banks. Assets in Missouri state-chartered banks totaled $189.2 billion, deposits totaled $163.1 billion, and loan volume totaled $125.8 billion.

Consumer Credit Lenders

The consumer credit section of the Missouri Division of Finance is responsible for licensing and regulating various types of consumer finance companies to assure compliance with numerous state and federal laws. As of July 2015, there were approximately 2,900 such companies licensed by the Division of Finance.

Mortgage Companies and Originators

Sections 443.701 - 443.893 RSMo, authorizes the Division of Finance to enforce laws regulating residential mortgage brokers and mortgage originators. Enforcement includes licensing and investigative powers.

A license is required to broker, fund, service or purchase residential mortgage loans unless the individual or company qualifies for an exemption. Before issuing a license, the Division of Finance is required to investigate each applicant for character, general fitness, experience and financial responsibility.
